TYLER, Texas (KLTV) – For four decades, the Texas Ramp Project has been a beacon of hope, providing the invaluable gift of accessibility to those in need, completely free of charge.

Team leader David Witt emphasized that their efforts extend far beyond mere construction; they are building pathways to independence.

“We’re providing mobility for people to get in and out of their house, to let them stay in their homes as long as they can,” Witt said.

Since its inception 40 years ago, the project has mobilized volunteers across Texas to construct wheelchair and accessibility ramps for the disabled and elderly, all without cost to the recipients.

This year alone, the Smith County team proudly completed their 124th ramp, a testament to their unwavering commitment.

“It’s amazing when we go out and see these people. We build ramps where they need to call ambulances to get them out,” Witt said.

Among those whose lives have been transformed is Marlene Frazier.

For years, her front door remained inaccessible due to challenging stairs, making entry and exit nearly impossible, even with assistance. “It was very very hard. I had to have someone help me to get up and down the steps, and it was really bad,” said Frazier.

Now, thanks to the Texas Ramp Project, Frazier has been granted a new sense of freedom, allowing her to use her front door and leave her home independently.

“It’s really fantastic to have people who care enough to come out and help people who can’t do it on their own,” said Frazier.

For the Smith County Texas Ramp Project crew, it is these powerful stories, like Marlene Frazier’s, that fuel their dedication, inspiring them to continue building, one ramp and one life at a time.
