Recently, thanks to a volunteer group from WellMed, a family in East Austin received an addition to their home that was truly life changing. This addition, a ramp, was built for Jimmy to assure he could continue to safely enter and exit his house. The build, organized through the Texas Ramp Project, was one of over 3,000 ramps constructed across the state last year helping people remain independent and safe in their own homes.
By early afternoon, what began as a home with unsafe stairs became a place of restored access. In less than a day, a barrier was removed. Independence was strengthened. Safety was restored.
For the family served, the ramp means reduced fall risk, greater confidence using a walker, and the ability to move in and out of their home with dignity. For volunteers, it was a powerful reminder that hands-on service delivers immediate, visible impact.
Since 1985, Texas Ramp Project has served more than 30,000 Texans — responding to a growing need across a state where more than 1.7 million individuals use mobility devices. As our population ages, demand continues to rise.
This milestone build also reflects the power of partnership. TRP operates through more than 3,500 dedicated volunteers statewide, supported by corporate and community partners who provide both funding and employee engagement.
Partners like WellMed and the WellMed Charitable Foundation understand the importance of independence and safety for the aging population and others who may need some additional assistance because of mobility concerns. Their support financially and through a volunteer network have supported the Texas Ramp Project throughout the state wherever WellMed serves. This aligned partnership translates directly into measurable community impact.
For Access Alliance members, this story is a reminder:
Your engagement does more than support a project. It removes barriers. It restores independence. It strengthens families. And it builds safer communities across Texas.
Forty years of service has been made possible because partners choose to invest in transparency, collaboration, and mission delivery.
And together, we are just getting started.
