The Value of a Ramp

There are many ways to quantify the value of a ramp built by the Texas Ramp Project. Materials average about $1,000 per build, and volunteer labor contributes an estimated $1,450 in value. In some cases, a ramp may even increase a home’s market appeal.

Yet the true value of a ramp can’t be measured in dollars. I’ve seen firsthand that its greatest impact is the freedom, dignity, and independence it restores.

On a recent build, I had the pleasure of meeting our client, Al. He was excited to have our volunteers at his home so he could safely enjoy the outdoors again. He asked me to open his curtains so he could watch the progress. When I asked what he was looking forward to most, his answer was simple: “Feeding my kittens outside again.”

Our client for this build was a man named Al who was recovering from an illness that caused him to be bed bound. When asked what he was looking forward to most, his answer was simple: “Feeding my kittens outside again.”

One of the most memorable builds I’ve experienced was for a family with a child who used a wheelchair. When the mother tested the completed ramp with her son, she was overcome with emotion. She shared that for years she had carried her growing son on her back to get him to and from the car, causing significant strain on her own health. Through tears, she thanked our volunteers. By then, many of us were crying too.

In fact, every ramp carries a value that cannot be calculated:

  • “I can’t wait to go to the beach.”
  • “I get to enjoy fresh air again.”
  • “EMS can transport my daughter safely out of our home.”

Perhaps one of these moments comes to mind from a build you’ve attended. If not, it may be time to join us on another one. Few volunteer opportunities offer the chance to make such an immediate and profound difference in the lives of individuals and families.

That’s the value of a ramp.
